What to check before you buy in Canada
1. A Canadian safety mark on the blanket and controller. Health Canada says electrical products should carry a recognized certification mark, that several marks need a small letter "c" to show certification to Canadian standards (for example cUL, cETL or CSA), and that a mark on the packaging alone is not enough. Check the label when it arrives, and return it if there is no mark.
2. Auto shut-off. Every pick above turns itself off. Look for a timer that matches how you use it: 3 hours for an evening on the couch, 8 to 10 for napping.
3. Washable, with a detachable cord. You will wash a throw more than you think. Unplug the controller first and follow the care label.
4. Size. 50" x 60" covers one adult on a couch. For two people or a bed, look at full or queen electric blankets instead.
Is a heated blanket expensive to run?
No. A typical throw draws around 100 watts on high (the Bedsure lists 100 W). Three hours on high is about 0.3 kWh, which is a few cents on most Canadian electricity rates. That is far less than heating a whole room.
Safety basics
Don't fold or bunch it while it is on, don't sit on the controller, and don't use it for babies, small children or anyone who can't switch it off themselves. Unplug it when you are done.
