Every December, a wave of new things arrives at once: gifts, decorations, extra food, guests' coats. If the house is already full, the season starts to feel like a game of Tetris you're losing.
The good news is that you don't need a weekend-long purge. You need the one-drawer rule: one small space, fifteen minutes, finished before you stop. Do it most days between now and mid-December and the house will feel noticeably lighter.
How the one-drawer rule works
Pick one drawer, one shelf or one bin. Set a timer for fifteen minutes. Take everything out, wipe the space, and sort what you removed into three piles: keep, donate and gone. Only the keep pile goes back in. The donate pile goes straight into a bag by the front door. That's it. Tomorrow, a different drawer.
Small spaces, finished completely, beat big projects abandoned halfway.
Where to start
Start where you'll feel it most: the kitchen junk drawer, the bathroom cabinet, the front closet. These are the spaces you open every day, so every session pays off immediately.
Once a drawer is cleared, small clear trays give every item one spot, so it stays that way.

The closet is where most of us feel the squeeze. Pack away summer clothes and spare bedding, and you'll find the space for coats, boots and the guests' things.
Shrinks bulky duvets and summer clothes to a fraction of the size. No vacuum needed with the hand pump.

Before the holidays is one of the best times to donate. Shelters, community centres and charity shops in many Canadian towns collect warm clothing, toys and household goods in November and December. Call ahead or check their website to see what they need most.
